Outdoor Explorers

Ages: 9 – 13 years old

Explore our local park system and discover a world of possibilities! Outdoor Explorers Summer Camp will include a mix of hiking, outdoor skills, storytelling, sports, art & crafts, and science – all focused on understanding and engaging with the natural world around us.

Specific activities may include: plant identification, outdoor survival skills (ie. shelter building and navigation), mapmaking, puppets, eco-printing/natural pigments and dyes, plant care (ie. seed starting and seed saving), painting with watercolors, music making, observational drawings with colored pencils, ultimate frisbee, capture the flag, scavenger hunts, and soccer.

Each week we will explore a different part of the park system and spend the hottest part of the summer afternoons on the banks of the James River. The river spaces we’ll visit are safe, easily navigable areas with no white water. If any days are exceptionally hot or in case of inclement weather, we will spend time at the Public Library or the VMFA (if drop off locations change we will provide 48 hours notice).

This is a predominantly outdoor camp, so preparation is key! Campers should bring a backpack and a reusable water bottle. Water refills and snacks will be provided – please note any allergies. Also included in the cost of registration is a notebook and sketchbook for each camper, as well as any supplies that we will be using.
